What can I expect at my appointment for Medical Marijuana?

In-person consultation

First, you will meet with your medical marijuana physician for an in-person consultation to be certified as a medical marijuana patient. Your physician will understand your condition and work with you to provide guidance to start your medical marijuana plan by suggesting various options and product suggestions at the dispensary treatment centers.

Once you have been certified by our medical marijuana physician, you will be entered into the Medical Marijuana Use Registry where you will complete the state of Florida’s application for your medical marijuana card.

Apply for your card: Next, you will need to apply for the Medical Marijuana Use Registry Identification Card, and will be responsible for the $75 payment to the Department of Health (debit and credit cards are accepted).

Approved and ready to purchase

Once your payment processes, you will receive another email from OMMU stating that you have been approved. You can now go to any dispensary treatment center and purchase your products. You do not have to wait for your card to do this. Just bring your Florida Drivers License or Florida ID and a copy of your approval letter until your card arrives.

Renewing your Medical Marijuana Certification

Identification Card: You will also be required by the state to renew your Medical Marijuana card yearly. It is recommended that you apply for renewal 45 days prior to the expiration date located on the front of your card. To renew your card, log back into your MMUR account and repeat the application process. The registry will send you a reminder email approximately 45 days prior to your expiration date.

Titration is a method used to find the optimal dosage that provides therapeutic benefits while minimizing potential side effects. The process involves starting with a high CBD-low THC ratio dose and gradually increasing it until the desired effects are achieved or until an optimal balance is found.

Here’s a breakdown of the typical steps involved in physician-recommended dosage:

Start with a Low Dose: Patients typically begin with a low dosage. The initial dose is often well below the maximum recommended amount to assess individual tolerance and response. General recommendation is to start low, go slow with your products.

Monitor Effects: After starting with the initial dose, patients are instructed to monitor their symptoms and overall well-being. This includes observing any changes in the targeted symptoms and noting any side effects or adverse reactions.

Gradual Increase: If the initial dose does not provide the desired therapeutic effects, the physician may recommend a gradual increase in dosage. The increments are typically small, and patients continue to monitor their response. Continue raising the dose and eventually you will start feeling your symptoms decrease.

Regular Communication with the Physician: Open communication between the patient and the physician is crucial during the titration process. Patients should report any changes in symptoms, side effects, or concerns to the physician, allowing for timely adjustments in the CBD dosage.

Finding the Optimal Dose: The titration process continues until the patient finds the optimal CBD dosage that effectively addresses their symptoms with minimal side effects. This personalized approach ensures that each patient’s unique needs are taken into account. Then add a micro-dose, such as one, two, or three drops of high THC product (1:1 Tincture). The idea is not to make you have any high while maximizing your symptom control.

Regular Reevaluation: Even after finding the optimal dose, regular reevaluation is essential. Changes in health, lifestyle, or medication may influence CBD requirements over time, and adjustments may be necessary.

Consideration of Other Medications: Physicians also take into account any other medications the patient may be taking. CBD can interact with certain medications, and titration helps manage potential drug interactions safely

It’s important to note that physician-recommended titration is part of a medical supervision process. Patients should never self-titrate without consulting their healthcare provider. CBD affects individuals differently, and what works for one person may not be suitable for another. The goal of titration is to optimize the therapeutic benefits of CBD while minimizing any potential risks or side effects.

Before starting medical marijuana, it’s crucial to have an open and honest discussion with your doctor. Here are key points to communicate to your doctor before initiating medical marijuana treatment:

Medical History: Provide a detailed medical history, including any existing medical conditions, chronic illnesses, and previous treatments. This information helps your doctor assess the appropriateness of medical marijuana for your specific health situation.

Current Medications: List all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter drugs you are currently taking. This includes prescription medications, as medical marijuana may interact with certain drugs. Your doctor needs a comprehensive understanding of your medication regimen to ensure safety.

Allergies: Inform your doctor about any allergies you have, including allergies to specific medications or components of medical marijuana products. This information is essential to avoid potential allergic reactions.

Mental Health History: Discuss any history of mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or mood disorders. Medical marijuana may impact mental health, and your doctor will consider this when evaluating its suitability for your treatment plan.

Expectations and Goals: Clearly communicate your expectations and treatment goals. Discuss the symptoms you hope to alleviate with medical marijuana and what outcomes you are aiming for. This helps your doctor tailor the treatment plan to your specific needs.

Previous Experience with Cannabis: If you have any prior experience with cannabis or marijuana use, share this information with your doctor. Discuss how cannabis has affected you in the past and any concerns or preferences you may have regarding the treatment.

Concerns or Questions: Express any concerns or questions you may have about medical marijuana. This could include potential side effects, legal considerations, or the method of administration. Open communication ensures that you are well-informed and comfortable with the treatment plan.

Legal Considerations: Be aware of the legal status of medical marijuana in your state. Understand the regulations, documentation, and any legal requirements for obtaining a medical marijuana card if applicable. Your doctor can provide guidance on the legal aspects of medical marijuana in your location.

Follow-Up and Monitoring: Discuss the frequency of follow-up appointments and monitoring. Regular check-ins with your doctor allow for adjustments to the treatment plan based on your response and any changes in your health status.

Remember, the discussion with your doctor is a collaborative process aimed at finding the most suitable and effective treatment for your specific needs. Your doctor will consider various factors to determine if medical marijuana is an appropriate option for you and create a personalized treatment plan based on your individual health profile.

Per the Office of Medical Marijuana Use, Florida law has specific requirements for the medical use of marijuana by minors.

These include:
A qualified physician must determine that the medical use of marijuana would likely outweigh the potential health risks for all patients. If the patient is younger than 18 years of age, a second physician must concur with this determination and such concurrence must be documented in the patient’s medical record.

Minor patients must first have a Consent for Minor Qualified Patient (CMP) form submitted to and approved by the Office of Medical Marijuana Use prior to beginning the Medical Marijuana Use Registry identification card application process.

A qualified physician may not issue a physician certification for marijuana in a form for smoking to a patient under 18 years of age unless the patient is diagnosed with a terminal condition, the qualified physician determines that smoking is the most effective route of administration for the patient, and a second physician who is a board-certified pediatrician concurs with such determination.

The certifying physician must obtain the written informed consent of the patient’s parent or legal guardian before issuing a physician certification to the patient for marijuana in a form for smoking. If a qualified patient is younger than 18 years of age, only a caregiver may purchase or administer
marijuana for medical use by the qualified patient. The qualified patient may not purchase marijuana.
